DIRECTIONS TO NORTH BAY, ONTARIO
The assembly and staging point for most Wilderness Way trips is Fairview Park, a campground on Riverbend Road at the edge of North Bay. North Bay is easily accessible by public transportation (bus, plane or train) from Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal, as well as by road (highway 11 or 17). If your travel plans are known in advance, you will be met upon your arrival in North Bay; otherwise, a 10 mile taxi ride will bring you to the campground.
For those coming from the northeast by car, I would suggest one of the following routes:
-
a) New York Thruway to border crossing at Peace Bridge (Buffalo) or Queenstown Bridge (north of Niagra Falls). Then Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) to Toronto. Then 427 N to 401 E to 400 N to junction with 11 N to North Bay.
-
b) New York Thruway to Herkimer (Exit 30). Then 28 N to 12 N to Watertown. Then 81 N to border crossing at 1000 Islands. Then 401 W to 2nd Gananoque exit. Then 32 N to 15 N to Arnprior. Then 17 W to North Bay to Highway 11 South.
[This is a more scenic route - shorter but slower driving than (a)]
-
c) (From Boston Area) 89 N to 133 N (at border) to 10 W (at Montreal) to 15 N (or W?) to 40 W. Then 40 W to 417 W to 17 W to North Bay to Highway 11 South.
or
Mass Pike to New York Thruway and then follow Routes (a) or (b) above
Approaching North Bay on Highway 11 N (or Highway 11 S if you enter North Bay from Highway 17), take the Pinewood Park Drive exit and, at the stoplight, continue straight ahead on 11 B. After about 1/2 mile, go left on Riverbend Road and follow it to the entrance of Fairview Park on the right. If you don’t see our site when you enter the campground, ask at the office.
In case of a last minute change of travel plans, a message can be left with Caroline Ritchey at (845) 679-4862. Within 24 hours of your arrival, leave a message at the campground (705) 474-0903.
NOTE - Unless other arrangements have been made, participants should plan on arriving at the campground sometime within the 24-hour period preceding noon on the day the trip is scheduled to begin.
DOCUMENTATION - Be sure to bring appropriate identification for entry into Canada and return to the United States. Due to the changeable nature of border security arrangements, be sure to check on current requirements. Minors, if unaccompanied by their parents, may need additional documentation.
