Centuries before the white man set foot in North America, the Native Peoples inhabited the land. In each area, for each type of terrain and climate, they evolved Structures for living, methods of hunting and food gathering, and means of travel which blended with and respected the natural environment. The Precambrian Shield, the bedrock of the Canadian North. provided a land dominated by an infinite system of lakes and rivers. For travel, the indian developed the canoe, which remained the sole means of summer transportation well into the twentieth century. Wilderness Way Canoe Trips are a part of this tradition, offering the participant not only a physical experience, but also an opportunity for personal growth.

Today survival on this planet demands that we reach a new harmony with each other and with our environment. Wilderness travel allows us to uncloud our vision. We can then perceive the intimate interconnectedness of all living things and the systems which support them. At the same time we learn basic skills, thus increasing our self-reliance and the ability to cope with our lives in simple terms. We find renewal of body, mind and spirit in our contact with the natural world.
